We need more recess!!!

By: Shaina Fusco

As the kids line up to go inside all you can see are frowns. Absolutely no one enjoys giving almost 5 hours of learning with only 20 minutes of recess in return.

Recess is important because kids need exercise. First lady Michelle Obama says we should be getting at least 45 minutes of activity each day, which we are certainly not getting! Recess is merely 20 minutes while PE is 30 minutes 2 days a week. We don’t even have ANY recess on Wednesday. We have no recess Wednesday and so little every other day that it is almost an imposable task to stay focused all day. I don’t know about you teachers but we can’t just sit in a classroom all day with so little recess in return. We have lots of energy that needs to get out but that can’t happen due to such lack of recess time. I think if we had more recess time we would be able to get rid of some excess energy. With all that energy building up inside of us we are like volcanoes. When we get too full of energy we will explode!!! Students will also become restless and may leave the classroom often which will result in them missing out on learning time.

Even if we only got 15 extra minutes it would make a difference. 15 extra minutes would be enough time for us to socialize. Short recess is getting in the way of friendships. How are we expected to make friends in other classes when we have so little time to do it? In life we will have to work in groups. Why not start now? Kids need to learn how to act in a group and how to be a good friend. We need time to socialize. I have friends in other classes that I love to talk with but don’t have time to due to lack of recess time.

Recess is very important to our education, health, and social ability. Without recess I predict our grades would drop severely.
