In this book Cassie is a really interesting character to look at. She knows that she is treated unfairly just because she is black in many situations. Take chapter five for example. When she, Big Ma, Stacey and TJ go to Strawberry to trade for goods, she goes to a store owned by a white man to get Big Ma's list of things she needs. She gives the man the list and he takes it, but before he could server them he served all the other white folks instead. Even a little white girl no older then her. When she finally goes over to the man to tell him that they were being waited on too long he tells her,"Well you get your little black self over there and wait some more." I was surprised to see that she had the courage to stand up for herself and yell back at the man. She was scared and angry but felt it was too cruel to be left alone. It seems like she thinks everyone else doesn't know the cruel ness of what happened. Like when Big Ma told her she had to apologize to Lillian Jean even though she already had. I think Big Ma only said that because she didn't want any more trouble for Cassie. That's a reason I feel Cassie's character isn't one to leave things left alone.
